What are ARB numbers?

ARB Numbers – California Air Resources Board licensing numbers.

Starting as of July 2009 all refrigerated vehicles travelling through California are required to have their reefer units tested for emissions and if they pass, they must each carry a set of ARB number decals on the two sides of the refrigeration units.

For Box trucks, Straight Trucks or Bobtail trucks, the reefer units are built to come out of the unit horizontally. Therefore, the number lettering has a small amount of space in which to fit on each side. Generally a 2″ ARIAL BOLD NARROW font will be used. This will come out to about 15 to 16 inches long for the number, and will fit with room on those reefers. The most common color for the numbers is black. However any contrasting color can be used.

On Semi-Trailers, the unit is vertical. The numbers are then created vertically to fit, reading from TOP to BOTTOM, on the refrigeration unit. The 2″ (ARB required size) numbers are about 24 inches tall overall (12 digits total).

What is ARB?

Transport Refrigeration Units (TRUs) are refrigeration systems powered by diesel internal combustion engines designed to refrigerate or heat perishable products that are transported in various containers, including semi-trailers, truck vans, shipping containers, and rail cars. Although TRU engines are relatively small, ranging from 9 to 36 horsepower, significant numbers of these engines congregate at distribution centers, truck stops, and other facilities, resulting in the potential for health risks to those that live and work nearby.

Since diesel particulate matter has been identified as a toxic air contaminant, the ARB adopted an Airborne Toxic Control Measure (ATCM) for TRUs and TRU generator sets on February 26, 2004. Please see more information about this rulemaking is at:  2004 TRU ATCM Rulemaking.  Key terms:  transport refrigeration unit, TRU genset, reefer, refrigerated truck, refrigerated trailer, refrigerated railcar, refrigerated shipping container.
